Weather Snapshot: From 40 mph gusts to glass-calm seas

After arriving in Newport, RIMagic Time was scheduled to continue on to Onset, Massachusetts. But nature had other plans.

On June 20, with winds sustained at 25 mph and gusts up to 40, we made the call to stay safely docked at the Newport Yachting Center. Seas were estimated at 4–6 feet, and while the skies were clear and the sun shining, conditions were not ideal for cruising.

Thankfully, Newport offered the perfect backdrop for a spontaneous extended stay. From morning workouts and SagTown coffee runs to unexpected dockside encounters (yes, we saw the coach of the LA Lakers!) and a few antics from our pup Ivy, who made herself right at home in the dockmaster’s office, our crew made the most of the delay.

Then, on the morning of June 21—the summer solstice—at 6:50 AM, we departed Newport under perfect cruising conditions. Winds were light out of the west-northwest at 5 mph, the temperature was a mild 76°F, and the harbor was so calm it looked like glass—a dramatic contrast to the day before.

Next stop: Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Newport, we’ll be back
